Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment procedure used for the regeneration of tissues (bone, tendon, muscle, skin). Shockwave therapy works by passing sound waves through the skin to the injured part of the body, using a special machine. These shockwaves break down scar and increase circulation, which stimulates new blood vessel growth and encourages stem cell migration to the damaged area. Shockwaves are a scientifically proven treatment of acute and chronic pain, with virtually no side effects. Typically, conditions are resolved after 5-7 sessions.
Shockwave therapy has proven itself to be a viable and effective treatment option for patients suffering from chronic injuries- primarily those involving connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons because of overuse, sport, or repetitive strain. This treatment option is most suited for patients with tendinopathies lasting greater than six weeks, including tennis elbow, Achilles or shoulder tendonitis, rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis. However, it can also provide relief from short term injuries and muscle tears.
